Show Notes

This Advent season, join us each weekday of December for a special reflection led by Jenell Coker. Each week, the reflections will focus around a different theme of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. We hope these short meditations can be a meaningful part of your Advent practice.

For week 3 of Advent, our focus is "joy". Today's reflection is entitled "Joy in the Journey" and is based around the scripture found in Psalm 16:11.

[00:00:10] Hello Collective Table Podcast. [00:00:13] Today our reading is in Psalms 16:11. [00:00:18] You make known to me the paths of life. [00:00:22] Your presence. There is fullness of joy. [00:00:28] The psalmist reminds us that joy isn't only found in destinations, it's found in the journey itself. As we walk with God and witness God's presence along the way, this verse invites us to trust that every step, even the difficult ones, is part of a greater path of life. [00:00:53] John Muir, the naturalist and environmentalist, often spoke of the joy he found in the wilderness. For Muir, the act of walking through forests, climbing mountains, or simply pausing to take in the beauty of a single flower was a spiritual experience. [00:01:12] He believed that every step in nature drew him closer to God. [00:01:18] His journey reminds us that the path itself is sacred, not just the mountaintop moments or the view at the end. As Christians, we can embrace joy in the unfolding process of our lives, even when the road feels uncertain or incomplete. [00:01:39] Life is really rarely a straight line, and often we don't understand the full picture until much later. [00:01:48] Yet joy is available in the small daily moments. The kindness of a stranger, the laughter of a child holding hands with another, listening to great music. [00:02:04] And I imagine you could fill in more spots where you find joy in this list that I've just created for your practice today, we are encouraging you to go on a yellow walk and find as many yellow things as possible. [00:02:25] Yellow can remind us of sunny, joy filled moments. [00:02:30] If you are homebound, maybe consider making a yellow collage with photos. Will you pray with me, Mother of Complete Joy? [00:02:41] Help us along our journey to find moments of jubilation during this Christmas season. [00:02:48] Make us brave to put ourselves in the way of joy. [00:02:53] Help us to be grounded in the present moment, not worrying about what's in front of us or what has gone behind, but just taking a few seconds to take it all in. Amen.
