Show Notes

This Advent season, join us each weekday of December for a special reflection led by Jenell Coker. Each week, the reflections will focus around a different theme of Advent: Hope, Peace, Joy, and Love. We hope these short meditations can be a meaningful part of your Advent practice.

For week 3 of Advent, our focus is "joy". Today's reflection is entitled "Joy in the Gospel's Promise" and is based around the scripture found in 1 Peter 1:8.

[00:00:09] Hello Collective Table Podcast Today our scripture reading is 1st Peter 1:8. [00:00:17] Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not see him, now, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory. [00:00:32] Peter writes these words to a scattered and persecuted church. [00:00:37] He reminds them that their faith in Jesus is a source of unshakable joy even in the midst of their suffering. [00:00:47] This joy doesn't come from material circumstances or outward victories, but from the mystical and transformative work of the Holy Spirit who connects them to Christ's love and hope for liberation. [00:01:05] History offers us countless examples of the Holy Spirit's liberating joy in action. [00:01:13] Maybe consider the songs of the Civil Rights movement. Spirituals like this Little Light of Mine and We Shall Overcome were not merely expressions of hope, but manifestations of a spirit filled joy that refused to give up during a time of despair. [00:01:36] They were sung with tears and trembling hands, yet they carried a power that inspired courage and action and brought together a community of strength. [00:01:51] Our faith teaches us that joy is not separate from justice. It is the fuel for the work of liberation. It is the belief that the Spirit is always present, breathing new life into broken systems and renewing our strength even when the road feels long. [00:02:14] This is the mystical joy of the gospel. [00:02:18] It's a joy so profound it transcends our circumstances and points us to new creation. [00:02:27] It shows us God is building something amazing among us. [00:02:34] For your practice today, take a moment to connect with the Holy Spirit. [00:02:41] You might want to give yourself a few extra minutes for today's practice. [00:02:47] Find a quiet place. [00:02:49] If you pray through writing, grab your journal. [00:02:53] If you like to meditate, grab a mat or a pillow so you can be comfortable. [00:02:59] Or use your mind and your words to just invite the Spirit to reveal the areas of your life or community where liberation is needed. [00:03:13] And after some time of sitting and waiting and listening, ask where is the Spirit calling me to bring joy and justice together and to others? [00:03:28] Will you pray with me? [00:03:30] Liberating Father, show us where we are bound. [00:03:36] Show us where we are not finding room to move, where we are feeling jailed by circumstances or from our own mind of holding ourselves back, or where our city, our community, our world, those around us, our neighbors are being oppressed. Help us to be co creators in your transformative spirit. [00:04:10] Allow joy to permeate those places and show us that our lives and the lives of others can be set free. [00:04:22] Amen.
